But did you know our founding fathers couldn't decide on a bird for our national symbol. Benjamin Franklin wanted a turkey and everyone else wanted an eagle. Today you will help create trees that are famous in Washington D.C. These tress are a symbol for the capital and represent growth in our country. It's Chinese New Year Chinese New Year begins sometime between January 21st and February 20th, and lasts 15 days. This dragon is a symbol of good luck. Dragons are sometimes used in Chinese New Year parades. Chinese New Year Is a Special Time! People say good-bye to the old year and welcome the new year. A Time for Color: Many people wear red and gold. Those colors are thought to bring happiness and wealth. Family and friends give children small red envelopes filled with money. A Time for Food: People eat special foods, such as noodles, during Chinese New Year. They also eat dumplings and other foods called dim sum. A Time for Good Wishes: People decorate their homes with paper decorations and scrolls.2 They usually show symbols of good luck, wealth, and happiness. A Time for Celebration: The Chinese lion dance is often part of the Chinese New Year celebration. People believe that the dance brings good luck.
The Year of the Monkey The Chinese people use an animal to name each year. There are twelve animals. They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. People born in a certain year are believed to have a specific set of characteristics. For example, people born in the Year of the Monkey They are cheerful and energetic by nature and usually represent flexibility. People under the sign of the Monkey are wise, intelligent, confident, charismatic, loyal, inventive and have leadership. The weaknesses of the Monkeys are being egotistical, arrogant, crafty, restless and snobbish. |
