Growth Mindset: Praise

Currently I am participating in a county professional develpment course for the next 6 months. The course focuses on Assistive Technology for Special Education Services. It is not only a valuable course for Special Education, but I have found so many ideas to apply to my classroom and everyday life.

I want to share with you all a video that is based on the Universal Design Learning practices.
Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.
The framework asks everyone to look at the individual who is learning and find pathways in their brain to enhance or expand upon their own expertise or strengths. Watch the video and look for a new way to "praise" children. Please watch the video below and you might be surprised how your whole perspective on how to talk to our children about the good things they choose to do.

Amber Oaks Pumpkin Farm

This place had it all... pomegrantes, popcorn, chestnuts and pumpkins! This has to be one of my favorite field trips of all time. Amber Oaks Farm really knew how to let us experieence life as a farmer and have a little fun at the same time. We started of with tasting different types of seeds that they grow on the farm. Next we took a walk to the garden and tried one basil leaf with a tomato. After that we walked/ got lost in a kiwi maze! Once we found our way back we collected chestunts (with our toes) and watched the farmers roast them. A lot of our friends were brave enough to try them! We walked over to the small pumpkin patch to pick out any pumpkin and then took a hayride to lunch. What a day! If you have a sleepy kid at home I really don't blame them! Thank you to all the volunteers who came and enjoyed the day with us!

Last Week
So much fun was had at our construction day! Check out our video of all of the Kinders engineering shade structures to protect an object from the sun.

Next Week... 10/5
We are exploring our plants this week and how the sun is helpful to their growth and animals.

In math we are starting Chapter 2 comparing numbers by looking at which number has more or less.
Amber Oaks Farm Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
Our first field trip is on October 22nd is at 8:00 am. We will be taking a school bus to the farm and we will need chaperones on the bus. Since we are going with second grade there will be limited seating on the bus for parent chaperones, however you are welcome to drive their in your own car. If you do decide to drive yourself I highly encourage you to carpool with another parent. The venue requires to know the specific amount of cars and buses arriving at the farm. Sign up to chaperone here.

We will have a bag lunch at the farm and return to school by 12:00 pm (I have a meeting in the afternoon so the students will have a substitute). You can still have a lunch provided by the school. Be sure to mark on the permission slip that you would like to have lunch from the school.

Donations are needed so that every student can participate and receive a pumpkin. There are envelopes outside the classroom door to put cash or a check in. Seal the envelope and hand it directly to me.

Picture Day
Wear your cutest outfit on October 13th! Parent volunteers in the classroom please attend as well to get a AVCCS volunteer badge.

Jog-A-Thon
Hit the Pavement... ask your friends, neighbors, extended family members to get those last minute donations due by October 12th. If you can't go door to door send this link to all of your contacts: https://www.gofundme.com/4x24sac4

The class will be walking down to the field at 12:45pm. Backpacks and lunches will be left in the classroom. Please meet us down on the field.  Parents are welcome to come watch from 1pm to 2:00pm. After the run is over we will walk as a class back to the classroom and you may pick up your student and their backpack at 2:10pm. Students must come back to the classroom so that I can be sure to check them out.

Harvest Festival
We are starting to get ready for the Harvest Festival. Check out the sign up page to help volunteer at the booth or donate supplies. More specific information will be available next week.
